Tragedy at the Boston Marathon
Not entirely sure what to say as I type this. Yours truly is okay, and was many miles removed from the location (s) where this happened. Of course, I join everyone in prayers for the victims and families. At this moment, there is no confirmed information about who may have set off these explosives, although it is clear that it was an attack of some sort. Both Gov. Patrick and President Obama refused to use the words 'terror,' 'terrorist,' or 'terrorism' during their briefings, which is really outrageous. Obviously, the person or people were trying to cause terror. And they succeeded! This IS terrorism, whether it's some domestic nutjobs, an Islamist group, or whoever else. Until we find out more about who did it, how they did it, and what their motives were, it's really only a guessing game as to whether it could have been prevented or not. What on earth could possess someone to do this is way beyond my comprehension, but they will get what's coming to them. Apparently, an eight-year-old boy is one of the two people confirmed to have been killed. Many more are maimed for life. It's really hard to wrap one's head around this level of evil. I don't even want to get into conspiracy theories at this time, but I see they are flying fast and furious across the Net already. I'll just say, to the people or person responsible, you don't mess with our country, and you don't mess with Boston. President Obama was right about one thing during his press conference: Boston is a tough city, and Bostonians are coming together to help each other.

Reflections on what should have been
If I had known, at the dawn of my adulthood in the 1990s, of the economic & social meltdown that would be coming and is now here, I would have lived my entire life differently. None of the drugs, the low-wage jobs, the reckless spending of what money I did earn, the far-flung adventures (traveled quite a bit in those 'carefree' days.) Certainly wouldn't have wasted my time trying to be accepted by others who, in retrospect, weren't worth the time of day. Perhaps I would have learned a trade, though I know I would make the world's worst handyman and I'm simply not inclined toward blue collar pursuits. As it was, I only made it through one semester of college before I decided to quit and go to work instead. Retail work was even then a dead-end job, though not to the extent it is now, considering wages have not gone up while the cost of living has skyrocketed. One would be just as well-served dumpster diving for their daily bread as opposed to spending a single day in a retail job, and I'm only slightly exaggerating. So, knowing what I know now, I still can't say for sure what exactly I would be doing differently, only that I would have done exactly the opposite of everything I actually did do. Maybe I would have gone to a more suitable university, picked a more worthwhile major, and stuck with it. But, I'd probably go to work just as I did, only in a different field. More to the point, though, I would have been saving nearly penny I earned, eyes firmly focused on the dark future that lay ahead instead of indulging my vanities of the moment. The teenagers and young twenty-somethings of today are living in a very different time than the one I came of age in, and I sincerely hope they are making better life decisions than I and so many others of my time did. Then again, we had the luxury of being screw-offs; the kids of today simply do not.

Enough already!
Utterly uninterested in, and yet also horribly annoyed by the coming of tonight's annual Grammy Awards. When are people finally going to have enough of the pop culture noise? Watch a game or read a book on your down time, folks. Stop giving these perverts & ego-maniacs attention ...

A few random observations on the past year
- It wasn't just my imagination, 2012 truly was a rotten year by nearly every measure.
- Adam Smith: The former CFO of a medical manufacturing firm in Tucson, AZ, who was fired after videotaping himself berating a Chick-fil-A employee. Anyone have any idea what happened to this lowlife?
- Savannah Dietrich: Kentucky teenager was raped, and then ordered not to talk about it by a judge. As of late-July, she was facing jail time after she refused to follow the court order. A quick Google search revealed that prosecutors were forced to drop any actions against her following widespread public outrage. Good for this brave young lady!
- Penn State: As soon as Jerry Sandusky was sentenced, everyone just kind of forgot about this story. The university itself got a mere slap on the wrist. Is there any lasting shame or guilt for those in the PSU community? Has anyone in State College apologized to Vicky Triponey? Or, most importantly, to the victims, anonymous to the world at large but surely well-known in the community?
- Mormonism: In the end, we may never know whether Mitt Romney's faith was a factor in his presidential election loss. I don't recall a single news outlet, or anybody else, even asking the question following November 6. I suspect Mitt would have received more votes if he had been a mainline Protestant, but probably mostly in just the states he ended up winning anyway. Though, considering the large numbers of Evangelicals in Ohio, and how close that decisive state was, one has to really wonder.
- Syria: Assad has been on his last legs for well over six months now, but somehow is still standing. I think he's going to remain in power for many years to come, for better or worse.
- Tanya Dixon-Neely: North Carolina teacher who told student he could be 'arrested' for criticizing President Obama. As far as I know, no disciplinary action was ever taken against this woman. As with Adam Smith, we shouldn't let these little tyrants get off the hook for their crimes. They need to be kept in the spotlight, checked up on every now and again to ensure they are not violating anybody else's rights.
- Boston radio: After many years of steady formats, the radio dial in Boston changed significantly in 2012, becoming a lot more 'urban' sounding. It was an atrocious year for popular music, as so-called 'EDM' (electronic dance music) seems to be the 'new normal,' and formats like news/talk, rock, classical, soft AC, and others continuing to be phased out. And, make no mistake, there is a political agenda here, this isn't all about changing tastes among listeners (though, admittedly, that is a factor) or advertising dollars.

Way to go, Bibi!
Congratulations to Mr. Netanyahu, a true leader, on his re-election victory. Israel is in good hands, in spite of the many challenges facing it, and that is one of the only true blessings we have left ...
